It's important to note that many kidney diseases are asymptomatic in early stages, so regular checkups are essential, especially if you have risk factors like diabetes or hypertension.
It depends on the stage and type of kidney disease. Acute kidney disease can be reversible if treated promptly and the underlying cause is eliminated. However, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is generally not reversible, although its progression can be stopped or significantly slowed with proper treatment, blood pressure control, diabetes management, appropriate diet and specific medications. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to preserve kidney function.
Hemodialysis is a treatment that filters the blood when the kidneys can no longer do so efficiently. During the procedure, your blood is pumped through an external filter (dialyzer) that removes waste and excess fluids, returning the clean blood to your body. It's typically done 3 times per week, with sessions lasting 3-4 hours each. It requires vascular access (arteriovenous fistula, graft or catheter). While it requires time commitment, hemodialysis allows many patients to maintain a good quality of life while waiting for a transplant or as long-term treatment.
